PUBS |

Nottingham CAMRA,
The Blenheim at Snape Wood, Bulwell (Terminus of the NCT 68
and 69 routes) has seen a renaissance and now sells Directors
on a permanent basis with a rotating guest beer, currently
Pedigree soon to be Speckled Hen, on the other pump.
Other beers on draught are Websters and John Smiths bitter,
Manns Chestnut mild, Guiness extra cold, Carling and Fosters
Lager, Woodpecker and Strongbow ciders.
Currently, only the bar is open during the week with the lounge
open Friday and Saturday evenings for entertainment and Sunday
for serving lunches.
Lunches are excellent, very reasonably priced and it’s
all fresh food (no boil in the bag!!).
Hope this information is of use to your members and that some
will visit Teresa and Mick who are making tremendous efforts
to revitalise a pub which some of us thought had died a death.
On that subject, the Bull & Butcher and the Nelson (both
at Bulwell) have now been flattened. Kind Regards
Peter Burnett |

| Hi
there Webmaster
Please note that Rosie O’Briens is most definitely
NOT closed as reported in your April edition! It was only
closed for 2 days end-March so that the beer lines, pumps
and bar top could be refitted.
In fact the whole pub is not only in the process of refurbishment
inside and outside, it is also under new and caring leaseholders!
Currently we have Bombardier & Spitfire as guest ales
brought in for St Georges day yesterday when we were also
offering home cooked Venison Stew for the celebrations.
(It sold out). Deuchars is also a regular feature and Batemans
and Timothy Taylor are coming soon to our well-maintained
cellar and new bar and redecorated interior. We also feature
a range of bottled beers and premium lagers and decent wines
to complement our ales.
MONDAY NITES ARE NOW REAL ALE NITES when guest ales and
regular ales will be on offer.
TUESDAY nites have become very popular CURRY NITES featuring
home cooked curries from around the Far East ~ this week
we had Thai Green and next week is Malaysian Rendang. £4
for curry, rice & a pint can’t be bad!
SUNDAY ROASTS are now a weekly fixture too with a range
of fresh veg and not one ping of a microwave can be heard,
just the sound of satisfied eaters and drinkers.
The new team is headed up by Rosie & Linnee. Picture
to follow!!
Warm wishes
Sue

The
Poet & Castle
Hi folks,
Kim Beresford here of The Old Poets Corner and Ashover Brewery.
www.oldpoets.co.uk
We are currently refurbing the New Clock at Codnor, which
is not quite in your area but not far out from the border
of Erewash, Mansfield and Notts.
We would like to advertise our opening weekend in your next
issue of Notts Drinker, deadline permitting or failing that
a generic advert will be ok.
The pub is to be re-named ‘The Poet & Castle’
and will be cast in a similar mould to the Poets Corner
with Eight beers on hand pull and at least four traditional
ciders, Belgian draught beers, no nonsense traditional pub
food and regular live music (predominantly rock, blues &
folk).
We hope that Codnor is ready for this!!
The opening weekend commences on Friday 23rd May and I have
attached our advert copy/flyer, please feel free to pass
this on to anyone that may be interested.
If any of your committee or editorial staff would like more
information please contact me on 07976 574361 or kim.beresford@tiscali.co.uk
Attachement
Best regards
Kim & Jackie Beresford

A colleague and Myself within the County Councils Historic
Buildings Unit are trying to research the history of Beeston
Maltings, a significant local building, adjacent to the Victoria
Inn.
I wondered If CAMRA would have any information on the site
itself and in relation to the pneumatic brewing process, which
is said to have been used here. In the absence of this would
you or your members be able to suggest any group or individual
who maybe helpful with the above.
Any help you could provide would be gratefully received
Kind Regards

SMOKING
BAN |
| |
Hi,
I agree with you, Its the best thing that's happened to pubs
for a long while!
My local pubs used to be very smoky, now I can have a pint
and breath fresh air!
Cheers

Hi, what's
interesting but I suppose obvious is that when I have visited
a pub like the Stratford Haven in West bridgford on a sunny
Sunday afternoon (rare this year I know) with a small outside
area my wife and I chose to sit outside, before the ban there
were probably equal numbers of smokers/non smokers both inside
and outside but now if you want to sit outside then it seems
all the people are smokers so you are forced back inside if
you don't want the usual inhaling smoke, smoky clothing etc!
Ah well come winter it wont matter!

Dear Camra,
I was once given a mouthful of abuse by a snotty bar manager
when I complained about the inequality of the price of two
halves as compared with a full pint, to such an extent that
I consulted the Customs and Excise.
A licensee is only legally allowed to charge a different price
for a pint and two halves if this is clearly marked at the
point of dispense, ie there should be a clip on the beerpump
handle saying that a half pint is £1.25 but a pint is
£2 or whatever. This is not the answer which I had wanted
to hear, but it was a stick for me to beat the offensive little
gobshite with the next time I went into his pub. I was then
barred, but the pub closed shortly afterwards.
